A New School Year, A Clearer Focus
Summer has a way of creating just enough space to step back and reflect.
This summer, I spent time reading The Pruning Principle, a book built around a simple idea from horticulture: the healthiest trees are not the ones with the most branches, they're the ones that are carefully pruned. Healthy growth isn't about adding more. It's about making thoughtful choices. Every branch a tree keeps requires energy that can't be invested elsewhere.
Schools aren't all that different.
Public education is filled with good ideas, worthwhile programs, and meaningful opportunities. But if we're not careful, doing more can begin to compete with doing what matters most. As a district, we have a responsibility to continually ask where our time, resources, and attention create the greatest impact for students.
That is the work before us this year.
Our guiding principle is simple: Students First. Every decision should help us become a more coherent and connected district, one where our priorities are clear, our work is aligned, and every student benefits from a consistent, high-quality educational experience from preschool through graduation.
Last year was one of tremendous progress. Our students demonstrated strong academic growth, our teachers continued to innovate, and our community invested in the future of our schools through the successful bond election. Those accomplishments reflect what is possible when a community works together around a shared purpose.
This year, we'll continue building on that momentum. We'll engage our community through Design Advisory Groups as we begin planning future facilities, continue expanding innovative learning opportunities for students, and thoughtfully examine where we can simplify our work so that more of our time is spent where it belongs, with students.
The best ideas rarely come from one person. They emerge when educators, students, parents, staff, and community members listen to one another, challenge assumptions, and work together toward a common goal.
Thank you for the trust you place in the Aspen School District. It is an honor to serve this extraordinary community, and I look forward to the year ahead.
Together, let's simplify what we do, strengthen what matters most, and continue building a district that is coherent, connected, and unwavering in its commitment to putting Students First.
