Secretary
Suzy Zimet
Term expires November 2025
Two things happened in quick succession that changed the course of Dr. Susan Zimet’s life: she finished her medical residency in New York City and she and her husband happened to visit a friend in Aspen. Twenty-six years later, Zimet has two sons, both out of university now, and a thriving medical practice in Aspen.
While her children were in school Zimet became active with the District Accountability Committee (DAC) serving as chair and co-chair of a large and very engaged group. Recently she was asked by the DAC to consider rejoining to energize that past vitality and to help address some issues they wanted to highlight. Zimet has spent years learning more about educational policy, leadership, and best practices. She has subscribed to educational journals, reads as many books and articles on the subject as possible, and attends lectures and educational conferences. When Aspen Board of Education seats came up for election, she decided that it was time to run. She’d always wanted to serve on the Board, but her schedule as an Internist was too demanding. Recently she was able to give up her weekend and evening duties, so she felt the time was right. Zimet won handily along with incumbents Susan Marolt and Dwayne Romero.
“I was stunned that I won. But I’ve been practicing medicine here for 26 years and I’ve been involved with the Aspen Music Festival and School, The Aspen Valley Hospital, and the Aspen School District so I think I had name recognition,” says Zimet.
Zimet plans to focus on teacher pay and housing issues, academics, and budget—all topics that have been dear to her from her days on the DAC.
“I know that working with the Board will be great!” says Zimet. “I look forward to working with my fellow Board members toward the betterment of our students.”
